What is Island of Word, and what does it offer?
Island of Word is a mobile game that claims you can win money by playing it. It offers quite a significant amount as prizes, but is it the real deal, though?
Well, the only way to find out is to take a closer look at how this app works so you will have a clear idea of what you need to do to supposedly earn money.
The video below fully explains how the app works, and it also talks about all the important details you need to know about Island of Word. You can also read the full details below the video.

Option 1 – Playing the game
One way to supposedly earn from Island of Word is to just play the game. The idea is to complete a level by figuring out what words you can form from the given letters. To do so, you just have to connect the letters to form a word by dragging them in order.
It’s quite simple, and when you figure out all the words for the level, you will receive a random prize. But to claim the prize, you have to watch a video ad that usually lasts 10 to 30 seconds. And one thing I need to tell you is that the ads that will be shown are quite spammy.
Most of them (if not all) offer unrealistic ways to earn extra cash, so don’t be tempted to download them or believe what the ads are saying.
After you finish the ad, you can close it, and you will be asked to scratch off a virtual card to reveal what your prize is. Most of the time, you will win Island of Word coins, but from time to time, you can also supposedly win cash. And I do have to say that the app is quite generous with the cash it hands out, which alarmed me.
I have tested hundreds of apps before, and most of the time, if an app offers huge winnings, there’s always a catch, and you will not like it (but more on this later). After you finish scratching off the virtual card, your winnings will be credited to your account balance.
To sum it up, to win a prize, you must complete a level of a game, watch video ads, and scratch off virtual cards to win prizes. It sounds very easy, but there are a few things you will need to learn about the app, and I will discuss them all later.
Option 2 – Sweepstakes
As explained above, you can win coins when playing the game. But what can you do with the coins you’ve won? Well, you can use them to enter the sweepstakes draws Island of Word offers.
To join, you just have to buy a ticket using the coins you’ve won from playing the game. When I tested the app, a ticket for the $50 prize draw cost 2,500 coins each, while a ticket for the $500 prize draw will cost 2,500 coins.
I’m not sure why the lower prize costs more coins to join, but that’s how the prize draws work. As you can see, these prize draws also offer quite a sizeable amount as prizes, so I would understand if you are tempted to join.
However, I’m not sure how the app announces the winners because there’s no section inside the app that lists all the winners of previous prize draws. Plus, the app also doesn’t say if they will email you if you win, which is usually the case with apps that I have tested before. This opportunity is not quite clear, so it’s not something I would recommend.

How do you get paid?
As explained above, you can supposedly win cash from the opportunities the app offers. But the question is, how can you withdraw your winnings?
Well, inside the app, it says you can withdraw your winnings once you’ve won at least $7. As shown in the photo above, the app says you can withdraw your winnings via PayPal or CashApp.
However, there’s one problem with what the app is saying. When I tested the app, I waited until I was able to hit the threshold to withdraw my winnings, which actually didn’t take that long since the app handed out prizes like crazy.
The problem was, when it was time to withdraw my winnings, the app just kept telling me that I needed to reach the $7 threshold, which I definitely did since I won around $12. This is what made me conclude that the app really doesn’t have any intention of paying you.
So to answer the question above, NO, you will not get paid by the app. It only looks like you can withdraw your winnings, but you actually can’t.
If you are looking for apps that will really let you earn money, I suggest you check out the top sites that pay via PayPal instead.
Red flags you need to be aware of
When I tested Island of Word, there were several red flags I encountered that made me cautious of the app, and it turns out I was right to be worried.
Let me elaborate on the red flags I encountered so that you will know how to spot them in the future if you encounter other apps or even sites that offer ways to earn extra cash.
Red flag #1 – Exaggerated prizes
Every time I see exaggerated prizes, I automatically think that there’s a catch to what an app or site is offering. The same is true with Island of Word. You see if the app can really afford to award you a significant amount of money easily, the developer would go bankrupt in just a matter of hours.
It’s not realistic to expect to win $5 to $500 just for playing a game, especially if that game has very simple mechanics. These exaggerated prizes are there to entice you to keep playing, and while you are doing that, they keep earning from all the ads you will be watching.
Red flag #2 – Spammy ads
And speaking of ads, based on my experience, apps or sites that show spammy ads that offer get-rich-quick schemes are also often up to no good. As the saying goes, “Birds of the same feather flock together.”
Red flag #3 – Won’t allow you to withdraw your earnings/winnings
But probably the biggest red flag of all is that the app will not allow you to withdraw your earnings/winnings, no matter how much you’ve earned.
You see, the reason why the app is very generous with the prizes it hands out is that it really doesn’t intend to pay you. However, I was actually a bit surprised with Island of Word because it outright tells you that you can’t withdraw your winnings.
Normally, other problematic apps and sites I’ve tested over the years will usually add several hurdles before you can withdraw your earnings or even ask you to pay a certain amount before you can withdraw your earnings, which is actually worse because some people still fall for that.
Red flag #4 – App is in early access
Every time I see an app in the app store that says it is in early access, I automatically get suspicious. That’s because app developers usually set their app to this mode so that it can’t get any reviews.
As to why Google still allows that on their app store, I am not sure, but that’s what I have observed. You see if you are interested in downloading an app, you usually read the reviews first, so you will have an idea if other people like it.
But an app on early access doesn’t have any reviews, so you really won’t know what to expect from it. You’ll just end up trying it to find out if it is really worth it. And by that time, the developer has actually earned from you since you tested the app and watched a few video ads.
You just end up wasting your time or, worse, falling for whatever the app is offering. That is why you should always be wary when you encounter an online rewards app that is in early access mode.
Red flag #5 – Doesn’t provide support
Lastly, if an app doesn’t provide any form of support, you have to be very cautious with it. If they are not willing to assist you with your concerns, then, in my opinion, you should also not waste your time using that app.
I can only infer why the app doesn’t provide any contact information or even provide support because they know that all they will receive are complaints about why members can’t withdraw their winnings.
Final Verdict
Island of Word is an app that claims you can win cash by playing. However, the app only has drawbacks and doesn’t offer anything of value to you.
Let me wrap up this review by summarizing its pros and cons so you can understand why Island of Word is not an app you should waste your time on.
Pros:
- N/A
Cons:
- The app is very spammy
- Doesn’t let you withdraw your winnings
- Doesn’t provide support
In case it’s not quite clear, I do not recommend you waste your time with Island of Word. This app will not pay you a single dime, so you shouldn’t even download it.
