Is Rev a Scam or is it Legit? (Full Review + Rating)

Rev Rating

Rev is a decent site to earn extra cash from. However, when starting out, you have to be very patient because you won’t have access to a lot of projects. You will have to spend a lot of time completing projects to improve your status as a freelancer.

Are you looking for a way to earn extra cash?

If so, there’s a site called Rev.com that claims you can work as a freelancer and earn money by transcribing, captioning, or subtitling. So, if you are interested in it, I suggest you read on.

I have taken a closer look at Rev.com to see how it compares with other sites that offer the same opportunity. In this Rev review, I’ll give you a detailed explanation of all its features. That way, you’ll know exactly what to expect from it.

Then, you can decide if this opportunity is the right fit for you. So, let’s go ahead and get started, shall we?

What is Rev, and what does it offer?

Rev.com is a site that offers transcription, captioning, and translation services to its clients. For you to earn from this website, you will have to apply to become one of their freelancers (I will discuss how you can apply later).

And yes, it is indeed a legit site because you will get paid if you complete a project from Rev. However, this doesn’t automatically mean that Rev is worth it.

To figure out if this opportunity is the right fit for you, you must first understand how the site works, and the best way to do that is to examine the earning opportunities it offers. This is the best way to gauge how much time and effort is required to earn from it.

For that, I have made a video that shows exactly how you can earn from Rev. You can also read all the details below the video.

The earning opportunity – Projects

The only way to earn from Rev is to take on various projects. When you are accepted as a freelancer for Rev, you will be able to gain access to the projects available by logging in to the member dashboard.

Then, you just have to click the “Find Work” option, and you will see all the available projects. The projects that will be made available for you will depend on the position you apply for – transcriptionist or captioner.

rev transcribers
If you apply as a transcriptionist, you will have to listen to audio and video files and accurately type what is said to earn.

If you applied as a transcriptionist, then the projects you can work on will involve transcribing audio and video files. As shown in the photo above, you can earn around $0.30 to $1.10 per audio/video minute you transcribe.

If you are just starting as a transcriptionist, the most important thing you need to keep in mind is that if you want to earn efficiently, you have to be able to finish transcribing a file quickly.

You can’t spend several hours transcribing a 5-minute audio file because the time-to-money ratio will significantly drop. You have to finish projects quickly so you can work on more and therefore earn more.

rev captioners
As a captioner, you will have to accurately type what is being said in videos and sync the typed audio with the video.

If you apply as a captioner, the projects you can work on will involve watching videos and accurately typing what the person in the video says. As shown in the photo above, the pay rate for captioners is pretty much the same as that of transcriptionists.

Now, what you need to keep in mind is that claiming projects is on a first-come-first-serve basis. Rev will not assign you any projects. You have to be proactive and claim projects on your own.

When you are starting out as a freelancer, you will only be given access to projects suitable for rookies. This means there won’t be a lot of opportunities to earn. Plus, most of the audio and video files you have to work on have poor quality.

Your goal as a rookie is to complete at least 60 minutes worth of audio or video files. Once you’ve done that, your status will be elevated to Revver. When this happens, you will gain access to more projects and files with better quality.

Now, if you can maintain an average of 1,200 minutes of completed audio/video files in a span of 120 days, you will become a Revver+. This is the goal of every Rev freelancer. When you become a Revver+, you will be given access to projects before rookies and Revvers.

In short, you’ve got first dibs on every project available. This will significantly increase your earnings. It’s a hard goal to reach, in my opinion, but if you manage to do so, you will be able to earn a good amount.

Every time you complete a project, you will have to submit the necessary files. Then, Rev will review your work (it usually doesn’t take more than a couple of days for Rev to complete the review). If everything is up to standard, then you will receive the payment for the project.

In the next section, I will discuss how you will get paid.

How do you get paid?

As mentioned above, you will earn a certain amount for every audio/video minute you transcribe or caption. Once Rev finishes reviewing your work and approves it, you will receive compensation for the project.

Rev will then deposit your total earnings for the week to your PayPal account every Monday. The amount you will receive will be the total amount you’ve earned from Sunday 00:00 GMT to Saturday 23:59 GMT.

Rev will process payments automatically, and you don’t have to reach a threshold to receive your earnings.

Overall, I would say the payment system of Rev is relatively straightforward and convenient. I like the fact that it offers payment via PayPal because it is one of the most convenient payment methods available today.

How much money can you make?

The amount you can earn from Rev will depend on how many projects you can complete and your status as a Rev freelancer. As explained earlier, if you are just a rookie, you won’t earn much because you only have access to a limited number of projects.

The earning potential will significantly pick up once you can improve your freelancer status. That being said, it will take some time and a lot of patience to become a Revver, and even more so if you are aiming to become a Revver+.

In my opinion, I don’t see anything wrong with this kind of system because it incentivizes freelancers who work hard. But as a beginner, the earning potential will be relatively low. You will have to complete a lot of projects to earn a decent amount.

And as I’ve mentioned earlier, you will be dealing with poor-quality files a lot when you are a rookie, which can test your patience.

mobile version of rev

Can you use it on mobile?

Rev doesn’t have a mobile app you can download, and it’s not surprising because the work that needs to be done as a Rev freelancer will require the use of a laptop or a desktop. However, you will still be able to access the member dashboard from a mobile device conveniently because it is mobile-friendly.

You won’t have to zoom in to read the content or click links. This will be very useful for claiming projects because you can conveniently do so even when you are not in front of a computer.

But apart from that, I don’t see any other reason to access the dashboard from a mobile device.

Who can join Rev?

Rev is only available in certain countries. The photo below shows which countries it is available in.

rev availability
Rev.com only accepts applicants from specific countries.

As you can see, it is only available for people who live in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, and the US (except for people who live in California). If your country is not mentioned above, then this is not for you.

To become a freelancer for Rev, you will have to submit your application using the sign-up form provided by the website. Then, you will have to answer a quiz that will test your English and grammar skills.

The whole process of applying can take up to an hour to finish, so make sure you have ample time before you even apply. Plus, you’ll have to submit a sample of your work.

Rev will review your application, and if it is approved, it will send you a link to register as a freelancer. Once you’ve done that, you can now start earning.

The site doesn’t tell you how long it will take for them to review your application, but based on my experience, it won’t take more than a couple of days to hear back from them.

Can you get support?

If you have a question about the site or your account, you can check out Rev’s Help Center page. It discusses most of the important topics you need to know about the site and working as a freelancer. Aside from that, Rev also provides tutorials for working as a transcriptionist or captioner.

So, you will have access to everything you will need to work as one of their freelancers. If you still need assistance, you can go to the Help Center page and submit a request. Just fill out all the necessary fields and hit submit.

Overall, I would say Rev offers good support for its freelancers because it provides a lot of useful resources. Plus, you can conveniently get in touch with their support team, which is all you can ask for from a website.

Final Verdict

Rev is a legit site that will allow you to earn by transcribing audio or video files, or by making captions for videos. It has a couple of good features, but it also has some limitations you need to consider.

Let me wrap up this review by summarizing its pros and cons so you can see an overview of what the site offers. Then, you can decide if this opportunity is for you or not.

pros

Pros:

  • Offers payment via PayPal
  • No payout threshold
  • Processes payments automatically
cons

Cons:

  • Limited earning opportunities offered
  • Low salary
  • Long application process

In my opinion, Rev is a decent site to earn extra cash from. However, when starting, you have to be very patient because you won’t have access to a lot of projects. You will have to spend a lot of time completing projects to improve your status as a freelancer.

But once you clear this hurdle, you will be able to earn a decent amount. And if you manage to reach the highest freelancer status, you can earn decent money in no time. That being said, the amount you can earn will still not be comparable to a full-time income.
