If you are a writer and are looking for a way to earn extra cash, there’s a site called HubPages that claims you can earn a decent amount of money if you write articles for them.
But is HubPages legit, or is it a scam?
I’m always looking for new ways to earn online, so when I came across it, I decided to check it out to find out what it has to offer.

But earning from it isn’t as simple as you might think. To fully understand how it works, we have to examine the earning opportunity it offers. By doing so, you can get a clear picture of what you need to do to earn and whether it is worth it.

The earning opportunity – Publishing your article
The only way to earn from HubPages is to write an original article and publish it on the platform. Think of it as writing a blog post.
But, the earning process doesn’t really happen after you publish your article. Instead, in order to earn from the article you’ve published, you’ve got to get people to read it. Writing is actually the easy part, in my opinion.
Getting people to read your article is the hard part. You see, the reason why you can earn from the articles you’ve published on HubPages is that they will plaster ads in every article you publish. And if no one reads your articles, then no one will see the ads.
Hence, the goal is to get people to read it so they can view the ads in your article. Earning from this site is actually a bit complicated, as you can see. The first thing you need to make sure of is you write a quality article.
You need to always keep in mind that the topic you write about is interesting. Then, you need to make sure your articles are rich, in-depth, and bolstered with useful media, concrete facts, and reader-friendly formatting.
After you’ve done that, you then have to build a strong online brand, and doing so will actually take a lot of work. You can do a lot of SEO work to ensure your articles show up in search results. You can also promote your article on social media platforms, which, in my opinion, is the easiest way to get readers.
I could go on and on about the strategies you can employ to get a lot of readers, but that’s a whole other topic, so I’ll just sum it up as short as I can. The whole goal of publishing articles on HubPages is to attract readers so they can view the ads. Once you’ve done that, you can get paid.

How do you get paid?
As explained above, there’s more to this site than writing and publishing articles.
To get paid, you have to get people to read your articles. You see, every time someone views one of your articles, HubPages displays ads and/or affiliate products.
You then make earnings from revenues attributable to your articles. But, in order to participate in the Ad and Amazon Programs, you must activate the Earnings Program. The Earnings Program provides a way for HubPages to pay you directly for the Ad and Amazon Program earnings and other things like contest prize winnings.
To activate the Earnings program, you just have to go to your account settings and click My Account. Then, you need to click on the Earnings link, and under the Payment settings section, click the Get Started button (refer to photo above).
You will be asked to link your PayPal account. Once you’ve done this, you are officially registered for their Earnings Program. All you have to do is to get people to read your articles, and hopefully, they will click the ads in your articles.
Now, HubPages doesn’t provide a breakdown of how much you can earn per person that clicks the ads in your articles. But you’ll be able to view your current earnings by going to the Earnings Reports page or the Amazon Sales Report page.
Then, once you meet the minimum threshold ($50) in the Earnings Program, you will get paid by HubPages via PayPal around the 28th of the following month. They will process the payment automatically once you reach the threshold, so there’s no need to request for a payout.
The payment system of HubPages is quite simple, in my opinion, but what I don’t like about it is they don’t provide a breakdown of how much you can earn. It also has a very high payout threshold, so don’t expect to get paid quickly.
If you prefer sites that have a low payout threshold, I would recommend you check out the fastest paying sites instead.
How much money can you make?
Right from the start, HubPages is very clear that it is not a get-rich scheme. In fact, they even say that even good writers struggle to earn from this site, and it usually takes them 6 months or so before they can start to earn. That’s a very long time to wait, in my opinion.
That is why if you look at it purely from the perspective of earning potential, this site is not ideal. The time it takes to earn will be very long. In my opinion, if you are just looking to earn, your time will be better spent on other opportunities.
I would even say that it would be better if you just set up your own online business or even just go for sites that offer easier ways to earn extra cash like survey and Get-Paid-To sites.
Because if you really look at it, earning from HubPages is more or less the same as earning from your own blog. So, why not cut out the middleman and start a blog on your own?

Can you use it on mobile?
The earning opportunity this site offers is not suitable for mobile devices. So, if you are intent on earning from this site, you will definitely have to use a laptop or a desktop because writing and publishing an article is nearly impossible when done on a mobile device.
But, the HubPages website can still be accessed from a mobile device if you use a mobile web browser. The site is mobile-friendly, so you can pretty much navigate it from a mobile device conveniently.
This can come in handy when you want to check your earnings and you are not in front of your computer. However, that’s about the only thing you can do with the site if you access it from a mobile device.
Who can join HubPages?
HubPages is available globally. You can sign up as a member regardless of where you live. But you do have to be at least 18 years of age to register as a writer.
To register as a member, you just have to fill out the registration form. Then, you will have to confirm the registration by clicking on the verify link that will be sent to you via email. Once you’ve done that, you can now log in to the member dashboard and complete the set-up.
As mentioned earlier, before you can start earning, you will have to opt-in to their Earnings Program. So, I would suggest this is the first thing you do when you log in to the member dashboard. The good thing is that all you have to do is link your PayPal address to the site to opt in.
When you’ve done that, you can now start working on writing and publishing articles.
Can you get support?
If you have questions on how to start or publish an article, you can consult the Learning Center, which will also walk you through the process of getting set up with everything you need to earn. Aside from that, you can also check out the FAQ page and their forums if you have questions that need to be answered.
If you can’t find what you are looking for, then you can get in touch with the support team using the contact form provided by the website. Overall, I would say the site does offer a good support system for its members since it offers several avenues that will help you resolve your issues or inquiries.

HubPages is a legit publishing platform that offers a chance for you to earn by writing and publishing your articles on their platform. It has a couple of good features, but it also has certain disadvantages you need to consider.

That’s why if you are just looking to earn, your time will be better spent on other platforms that provide a more reliable way to earn.
