Is Wellfound Legit or a Scam? (Learn the Full Truth)

Wellfound Rating

If you are looking for a job or a side hustle and you are already an experienced remote worker, this can be a decent option, in my opinion. The jobs offer competitive rates, so you can potentially earn a full-time income.

Are you looking for a remote job or a side hustle? If so, there’s a site called Wellfound that claims you can find various remote jobs from startups or even established tech companies.

But the question is, is Wellfound legit or a scam?

Before you hit the sign-up button, this is something you must verify. In this Wellfound review, not only will I address this concern, but I will also show you the full truth of what it offers.

That way, you will know exactly what you are getting into, and you can properly figure out if what it offers is for you or not. So, let’s go ahead and check out Wellfound, shall we?

What is Wellfound, and what does it offer?

Wellfound is a website that specializes in connecting startups with job seekers. It used to be called AngelList Talent but has since rebranded.

Now, let me clarify that what Wellfound offers is just an opportunity to find jobs you can apply for. It doesn’t offer a guaranteed way to earn. So, if that’s what you are looking for, then this is not for you.

And yes, Wellfound is legit because the job opportunities you can find inside the platform are from legit startups or tech companies. But the question now is, is it the right fit for you? To find out the answer to this question, we must look at what Wellfound offers so you will have a clear idea of what you need to do to land a job.

So, here’s how you can potentially earn from what Wellfound brings to the table.

The earning opportunity – Jobs

As explained above, what Wellfound offers is just an opportunity for you to find jobs to apply for. Once you become a member, you can log in to the dashboard and you will immediately see all the available jobs you can apply for.

how to earn from wellfound
You must apply for the jobs offered on the site to potentially earn.

Wellfound will automatically filter the jobs you will see according to your profile, so all the job offers you will see should be a good fit for you.

You’ll find jobs for software engineers and developers, graphics designers, marketing, operations, sales, management, and more.

These job offers are typically from startup companies, and they are usually tech-oriented companies or businesses. Now, if you are interested in a job, just click it to see the full details. You will then see the expected salary, job type (whether it is full-time or part-time), responsibilities, requirements, and location.

If you are ready to apply, you must write a note to the employer. This will serve as your cover letter. After you have written your note, click the Apply button, and Wellfound will submit your application together with your resume (if you uploaded one during the profile creation process).

Your application will then show up in the Application section of the dashboard. This is where you can see the status of your application. If the employer is interested in hiring you, you will receive a notification from Wellfound. You will also receive an email regarding your application, so you don’t need to keep logging in to the dashboard to check the status of your application. You can just check your email inbox.

The next step is to go through the interview process. Since most jobs are done remotely, you can also expect that the interview will be conducted online. You’ll usually have to hop on a Zoom (or other online conference platform) call and speak with a representative of the company.

This, in my opinion, is the most important part of applying for a job. Like any other job application, impressing your potential employer during the interview phase is a must. So, you better brush up on your communication skills if you want to land a job.

After the interview, the employer will deliberate whether you are the right person for the job or not. Typically, employers require a certain level of expertise and experience, so if you already have the experience to back up your application, then you have a better chance of getting hired.

If the employer chooses to hire you, you will receive another notification, as well as an email from the employer regarding their onboarding process. You must follow all the instructions and submit all the requirements needed to start your new job.

As you can see, Wellfound is hands-off during the entire application process. All it really does is connect with you with potential employers.

Now, what I noticed when I was testing it out was that there were a decent number of job opportunities available, so you will usually find jobs to apply for at any given time.

How do you get paid?

Since Wellfound is not involved in the earning process, you can also expect that it won’t be involved in the payment process. You see, when you get hired, you will essentially become an employee of the company that hired you.

So, you can expect to get paid through the payment method the company is using. Based on my experience, remote workers usually get paid via some convenient payment gateway like PayPal, Payeer, AirTM, or even direct bank transfer.

So, this is what you should expect as the payment method to be used. And since every job is salary-based, payments will be sent automatically, and you don’t have to hit a threshold to receive your earnings.

That’s why I would say you can expect the payment system to be convenient and straightforward.

How much money can you make?

The rates of the jobs being offered on Wellfound are quite competitive. So, you can expect to earn good money from most jobs. This is why I would say its earning potential is quite good.

Of course, it all boils down to whether you can land a job or not, and that’s not an easy thing to do. From what I can see, most job offers are looking for experienced professionals, so if you are new to your field of expertise, you might find it hard to land a job on this platform.

mobile site of wellfound

Can you use it on mobile?

Wellfound doesn’t have a mobile app you can download, but you can still access the dashboard using your mobile device since it is mobile-friendly. This can come in quite handy if you want to check the status of your application.

However, if you want to apply for a job, I highly recommend you only use a laptop or desktop, because as explained earlier, you will have to write a cover letter when applying. This can be quite hard to do on a mobile device, in my opinion. So, that’s about the only thing you can do with the site from a mobile device.

Who can join Wellfound?

Wellfound is available more or less worldwide, so you should be able to sign up as a member regardless of where you live. However, you must keep in mind that some job opportunities will require you to live in a certain country.

So, even though you can sign up as a member, there’s still no guarantee you’ll find job opportunities unless you live in major countries like the US, Canada, and the UK.

how to join wellfound
You can use your Google account or create a username and password to become a member.

To sign up, you can use your Google account, or you can create your username and password. After signing up, you must set up your profile. During this phase, you’ll be required to choose the type of job you prefer (full-time or part-time), your skillset, experience, preferred salary, and location. You also have the option to upload your resume.

After you are done setting up your profile, you will be able to log in to the dashboard and start applying for jobs.

Can you get support?

If you have questions about your account or the platform in general, you can check out the Help section of Wellfound. It discusses most of the important topics you need to know. If you can’t find the answers you are looking for, then you can contact support.

There are a couple of ways to do that. Just click the Message icon at the lower right of the screen, and you can choose how you want to send your message. You can do it via email, or you can chat with a representative directly.

Overall, I would say Wellfound does provide decent support to its members since it offers a couple of convenient ways for you to ask for assistance.

Final Verdict

Wellfound is a legit site that will help you find remote job opportunities. It has a couple of good features, but it also has certain limitations you must consider.

To help you with your decision, I have summarized its pros and cons so you can get a clear overview of what it offers.

pros

Pros:

  • The jobs offer competitive rates
  • Available worldwide
  • Free to join
cons

Cons:

  • Most job offers require a certain level of experience
  • Doesn’t offer guaranteed earnings

If you are looking for a job or a side hustle and you are already an experienced remote worker, this can be a decent option, in my opinion. The jobs offer competitive rates, so you can potentially earn a full-time income.

But if you lack the experience, then this is not an ideal option because you will find it very hard to land a job. You might get lucky and find a startup that is also looking for fresh talent, but that is quite rare, in my opinion.

You can still sign up since it is free to join, but you must temper your expectations a bit. Now, if you are looking to earn a full-time income online, and you don’t want to rely on a third-party site, one of the best ways to do so is to build an online business.

  1. Hi there,

    How was your experience?

Replying as recently received a random text from someone claiming to be from Wellfound about paid opportunities, which never happened before and sounded scammy.

Wellfound FKA AngelList. Never regulated, people would post and never reply to candidates, never respond to inquiries and just decline or close out openings without any professional communication. Customer support was iffy too. It is a stretch on how to define them as it was given many chances over the years this way. As the platform went through growing pains, gave it the benefit of the doubt.

With startup creation, investor, top tier industry experience and exposure, reputable global MBA — it was touted as one of the best platforms. Was never given the opportunity to speak to live people on a phone call or video call to demonstrate my value, excitement to learn and grow, no matter the type of role (contract, temp, part time, full time, and yes equity for experience).

Then again, certain people were probably highly successful when paid role descriptions looking for Silicon valley, ex unicorn (e.g., Uber, AirBnb, Amazon, FB, Google) and those from the McKinsey, Bain, BCG tree or the same heavyweight VC firms fit the bill.
