If you are looking for ways to earn extra money online, you can find plenty of websites that claim to offer different ways.
One fairly popular site is called CrowdGen (aka Appen Crowd). This site promises to pay you for doing small jobs.
But does it deliver on its promise, though? In other words, is CrowdGen/Appen legit, or is it just a scam?
Let me address this concern right away.
Yes, it is a legit way to earn. But this doesn’t necessarily mean the site offers a good and efficient way to earn extra cash online. To figure out if this site is worth your time or not, we have to check a few things first.
This CrowdGen review will help you figure out what the site has to offer so you’ll know exactly what to expect, and you can then decide if this is a site worth investing your time into or not.
What is CrowdGen, and what does it offer?
Appen, the company that owns CrowdGen, is a company that specializes in collecting and labeling images, text, speech, audio, video, and other data used to build and continuously improve the world’s most innovative artificial intelligence systems.
It also offers a couple of ways for people to earn, which we will go over below.
It is important to note that Appen acquired Figure Eight in the past. So, the Figure Eight tasks that were previously offered on several Get-Paid-To (GPT) sites are now incorporated on this platform (I will explain later why this matters).
Also, just to avoid any confusion when it comes to the name, CrowdGen has gone through many name changes, including Appen Tasks, Appen Crowd, and Appen Connect.
However, it is now called GrowdGen. If you hear about Appen Tasks, this usually refers to the same platform, but not everyone is using the new name yet.
Now, let’s take a closer look at how you can earn from it so you’ll get a clear idea of the earning potential.
For that, I have made a video that explains exactly how you can earn from Crowdgen. You can also read all the details below the video.

The earning opportunity – Projects
When you first come to CrowdGen you must click the View Projects link to see all the available opportunities (refer to the photo below).
The application process is also how you will be able to sign up as a member of CrowdGen, which is quite confusing. Normally, with other websites, you'll have to sign up first before you can access the opportunities offered.
But with CrowdGen, you'll have to apply for a project before you'll be given access to their member dashboard.
The types of projects you can find here are, for example, creative writing, data collection, linguistic, search evaluation, social media, transcription, and translation. To work on a project, as mentioned, you must apply for it.
You can start by clicking the “Apply” button. Then, you'll see the full details of the project, including your responsibilities and the pay rate. Just be aware that just because you apply for a project, it does not mean you will automatically be accepted.
So, there is no guarantee how many projects you will get to work on, and it can take some patience to find work here. CrowdGen says it can help to fill out your profile, so this is a good idea to do right after joining if you decide to join after reading this review.
Another thing you need to know about the projects available is that some of the projects can be done remotely, while some will require you to be on-site. There are also hybrid projects where you can work remotely but be asked to go on-site from time to time.
That's why you must always read the details carefully before you apply for a project.

How do you get paid?
CrowdGen has a fairly simple payment system. For every project you finish, you will be paid a certain amount. It will then be credited to your account. The payout methods have changed a bit over the years I have been a member.
It used to offer both PayPal and Payoneer and then removed PayPal as an option, but as of updating this review, you can again choose whether you want to get paid via PayPal or Payoneer. You can also get paid via direct bank transfer, Airtm, or an e-wallet.
Personally, I think it is great that they are giving several choices now. If you are interested in sites that pay via PayPal, I recommend you check out the top sites that pay via PayPal.
And if you prefer Payoneer, you can check out a list of online jobs that pay via Payoneer here.
How much money can you make?
With a site like CrowdGen, the amount of money you can make will mostly depend on how well they pay and how many projects you can do.
In terms of payment, most projects pay a decent amount according to the industry standard. So, you are guaranteed that you won't be underpaid.
But the problem with CrowdGen is that there's no guarantee you will be able to earn from the opportunities it offers. As explained above, your application has to be accepted to work on projects. And CrowdGen, as you can probably tell, only accepts people who are eligible to work on the projects.
And as you can see above, the types of jobs/projects available are quite specific. You'll need to have certain skills to work on it. But overall, I would consider its earning potential to be quite decent. You can earn a decent amount from its projects.
The only real challenge is how you can join any of the projects available.
Can you use it on mobile?
CrowdGen has an app you can download but it is called Appen Mobile. It is available for download on both Android and iOS app stores,
The app has all the features of the CrowdGen dashboard. So, you don't need to sit in front of a computer to apply for projects.
But as for the work that needs to be done, you'll need to use a computer.
Who can join CrowdGen?
CrowdGen is technically available globally. That means you can register as a member regardless of where you live. However, as explained earlier, to sign up as a member, you'll need to apply for any of the projects listed. If you get accepted, you'll be given access to the member dashboard.
The only problem is that projects are only available in certain locations, so you have to live in a certain country to be eligible to join CrowdGen.
The application process will require you to fill out the application form and submit your resume. So, it's more like applying for a job, in my opinion. Just follow the instructions provided when you apply for a project.
If you get accepted, you'll be given access to the member dashboard. This is where you can set up the payout option. So, make sure to do this before anything else.
Can you get support?
I would say CrowdGen does a good job of providing support to its members. It has a fairly comprehensive Help page that discusses most of the topics you need to know about their platform.
Plus, if you can’t find the answers you are looking for or you are experiencing a problem or issue with your account, you can always create a support ticket to get in touch with their support team. Even their contact form is very detailed because you can choose the subject of your inquiry.
So, overall, yeah, I would say they do provide good support for their members.
Final Verdict
CrowdGen is a legit site that will let you earn by working on projects. It has a couple of good features, but it also has a few drawbacks.
Let me finish this review with a summary of its pros and cons to help you decide if this is a site worth joining or not.
Pros:
- Offers decent pay per project
- Offers payment via Payoneer and PayPal
Cons:
- Limited earning opportunities
- Takes some patience to earn
CrowdGen can be a way to earn some extra cash on the side if you do it with the right expectations, in my opinion. You need to be aware that this doesn't offer a guaranteed way to earn. You'll need to be patient in applying for projects because you will not always be eligible to participate.
So, it's not something you can reliably earn from. That's why if you are looking for sites you can easily earn from, I highly suggest you also check out the top GPT sites. This list has plenty of sites with good earning potential.
Plus, you will definitely find a site you can join regardless of where you live and regardless of what skills you have.
If you have any comments, questions, or experiences with CrowdGen, I would love to hear from you in a comment below.
I have already signed up and need to recover my original password to get back into my account just in case auto sign in does not work. Please email me. I don’t want to get locked out. Thanks.
You need to contact their support about this.
Should I set my paypal business account or just using my personal account to get my payment
Personal account is fine.
Their website requires to disable the VPN (Virtual Private Network) which I wouldn’t want to do because I think I am safer with my VPN on. Although I have already created an account and linked my paypal. I emailed their customer service for a request of deletion of my account.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and opinion.
Hello Mikael, great thing that I find out your website. I was worried about if Appen was legit or not. Now that I know Appen legit (in México?), would really appreciate your opinion about my experiences with this website:
I singed up about two weeks a go and haven´t started doing any task yet. Since then, I´ve applied for several tasks that asked me to install the Appen app, remove all type of extensions of the Chrome browser, download their own Appen browser, verify my celphone through a QRcode, take my self a picture through their website, pass a qualification exam or quiz, share my FB & instagram accounts, sing long sofisticated contracts that sets my email adress and celphone would be intercepted to asing tasks related to my conversations or interests and create a windows live ID. Also, to get paid, had to create an account in Payoneer wich informs I will pay “$3.00 – Every time you receive a payment & USD to MXN conversion fee – 2.00% above average market rates”. After I´ve followed all the instructions I get an email telling something like thanks for complete your file, consider your self on the list for the time a job shows up, but it doesn´t mean will get any as the demand as well still check on your profile. By now, I feel my whole intimacy is on the table and haven´t done any task or cash. Coupple of them already disapear or clossed the process without inform whats going to happen with my data. So, as you may see, the website has improved its resources as well its requirements. What should I think about them? Are they serious or am I being hacked?
If you have any doubts like this, you need to contact their support.
I did. Support team only asnwer I had to continue my register into Payoneer in order to get tasks, so I went back and did it. Then I haven´t get any tasks yet and I am on the way to see if I will get any job. Further to go on reading articles outside those webesites to learn more and gain confidence. Thanks for your response.
You are welcome.
